Episode 19: Introduction to Ritual Magic

[SCENE 1: OUTSIDE THE PHOTOMANCY DORM]

[sneaky music]

ROSARIO: Hello Ms. Tessek.

BRYNN: Seriously?

ROSARIO: I told Ms. Cotton it had to be the roof. But she insisted- “How’s she getting down though? No way down without passing through the antimagic field.” Even she didn’t think you’d be idiotic enough to hop from the corner of the photomancy tower to the main wall, creep along that wall, and climb through the open 5th-floor window of the Oswerian department. You’ve really been risking falling to your death every time you’ve snuck out this semester?

BRYNN: You really think I’d tell you if this was my only route?

ROSARIO: Well, it doesn't matter. Thanks to you we’ve extended the antimagic field and the detection field all the way around the tower, vertical and horizontal. Wanted to do it ages ago, but we never had the budget. You can thank the new magecorps security liaison for that one.

I’ll spare you more detention if you go back to bed right now. It’s enough for me to know your sneaking out days are over.

BRYNN: We’ll see about that.

CREDITS: Electomancy, Episode 19 - Introduction to Ritual Magic. Be advised - this episode contains discussions of parental incarceration and a mention of child murder.

[SCENE 2: THE YARD]

JENNA: Brynn! Give me back my book!

PEM: Okay. Talking a little loudly about this stuff…

ELLIE: Pem, there was nothing suspicious about the interaction until you said that. She could have been talking about, like, a textbook-

DEVON: Hello electromancers. For the record, I think all five of us together is inherently kind of suspicious at this point.

JENNA: *quieter* [electricity crackle] I went back to your hiding place, and it was gone! Give it back, now.

BRYNN: I don’t have it on me, Jenna. That hiding place wasn’t safe anymore. I moved it to a better one. And no, I didn’t read it.

JENNA: What do you mean “not safe anymore”?

BRYNN: Look, with the encryption broken, we can’t risk a teacher finding the book, okay? And I can’t apply the new encryption that lets only you read it until I can get access to some very specific items that are stored in a locked cabinet in the photomancy classroom and only accessible to Juniors and Seniors taking Ritual Magic.

JENNA: What happened to your legendary thief skills?

BRYNN: Leonard happened! That new magecorps liaison or whatever has upped security everywhere. That’s why I decided my old hiding spot wasn’t good enough, by the way. Used to be I could swipe anything easy. Now spell components have anti-umbramancy and anti-photomancy fields around them. I get within five feet, I appear. Which wouldn’t be a problem if I could go at night when no one is around, but they’ve blocked off all my escape routes in the same way, and my bedroom, so I can’t even leave a sleeping decoy Brynn in bed anymore.

ELLIE: Could you, like, make one? Out of physical stuff? I think that’s how mundanes do it, at least in the movies...

BRYNN: Hmmm. Interesting idea.

JENNA: Can we get a Junior or Senior to take out those components for us?

BRYNN: Not without telling them exactly what we’re doing.

JENNA: What if we had a teleporter?

BRYNN: Anti-teleportation spells are definitely a thing, but I doubt they have them everywhere. We have a blinker who will help us?

ELLIE: Do we have to drag Justin into this? He’s just a kid.

BRYNN: Right, your brother. I forgot. He’s like a 5, isn’t he?

PEM: Teleportation range increases logarithmically with power level, even a four should be able to cover the whole campus easily.

ELLIE: I don’t want him getting in trouble.

BRYNN: He shouldn’t. If there is a blinker blocker on that room, he’ll find out when he tries to teleport in, but it wouldn’t alert anyone that he’d tried.

JENNA: Didn’t you say the stuff is locked up, though? I don’t think any of our aspects work on a mechanical lock. I mean, it’s not electric…

BRYNN: I can pick a lock, easy.

ELLIE: Okay, but my little brother can’t pick locks, and you can’t get out of your dorm at night anymore.

DEVON: I can get the combination.

JENNA: How?

DEVON: Digging through Professor Rosario’s mind is probably beyond me. But, when a person enters a combination into a lock, they usually think about the numbers. If I’m standing on the other side of the wall, I can pick those thoughts out no problem.

BRYNN: Brilliant.

ELLIE: I will ask my brother, but if he says no, we’re not going to push this anymore, okay?

JENNA: Of course. Just see if he’s willing to help.

[SCENE 3: A HALLWAY]

BRUCE: Jenna, hey. How’s it going?

JENNA: Bruce! Were you able to make contact with my dad?

BRUCE: Yeah, I stopped by while I was in town. He said he’d sent you a letter a month ago- I guess it didn’t make it through. I checked with the mail office and they never got it either. Sometimes the post just loses things. Sorry about that. He’s doing fine though. Said he misses you. Didn’t have time to write a long one right there, but he jotted this down for you while I was waiting.

JENNA: Oh, thanks!

BRUCE: I also got this from your house. Mr. Collins told me you were joining the orchestra after all, so I thought you should have your own instrument.

JENNA: Dad kept this? I was sure he’d given it away.

BRUCE: Nope. He’d been keeping it in a box in the attic. Probably figured you’d pick it up again someday. He’d meant to mail it to you, but I told him I’d save him the postage.

JENNA: That’s wonderful. Thank you so much.

BRUCE: Better than a loaner instrument from the school anyway.

JENNA: Much better, yeah!

BRUCE: Jenna, you doing okay? I know this year has just been one thing after another. You know you can talk to me if it's too much, right?

JENNA: I appreciate that, Mr. McCray. I’m doing okay though. Things have been… better.

BRUCE: Just… be careful with Tessek. Everyone’s noticed you two getting chummy, but.. she’s mixed up in some stuff you… don’t want to get mixed up in.

JENNA: I’ll keep that in mind. I’ve got to put this away before my next class.

BRUCE: Alright. Take care.

[SCENE 4: A LOUNGE]

ELLIE: Please! I’ll owe you one.

JUSTIN: You already owe me several.

ELLIE: What do you mean? I’ve never asked you for anything for being the super cool older sister when you showed up here.

JUSTIN: You’ve never been a super cool anything.

ELLIE: Ouch.

JUSTIN: Just because we’re family doesn’t mean I’ll just break the rules for you anytime you want. Anyway, you can’t just teleport into or out of the blinker dorm for obvious reasons.

ELLIE: Well, I know that’s not true. Cause when Lauren was dating Amal after we broke up she used to teleport out at night to see him all the time.

JUSTIN: Ugh. There is a way around the block, but it’s really, really secret.

ELLIE: Ok, you can keep it really, really secret. You don’t have to tell me what it is, just use it.

JUSTIN: Make it worth my while.

ELLIE: Okay, fine. You get this stuff for us, and I will do your math homework for a week.

JUSTIN: Two weeks.

ELLIE: Two weeks, fine. It’s fifth-grade math, it’s not that hard.

JUSTIN: Not that hard for you. Okay, but if I get caught I’m telling mom and dad you made me do it.

ELLIE: Tell them what you want. I’ll get you the shopping list and the combination for the lock tonight.

DYLAN: Hey, Ellie. Can we talk for a minute?

ELLIE: Uh, sure….

DYLAN: Who’s the little kid?

ELLIE: Uh, my brother.

DYLAN: Oh, cool. I didn’t know you had a brother here. That’s pretty rare, isn’t it? Two mages in one family?

ELLIE: Uh, it’s not that rare. I mean, there’s the Rashid twins, and Kayla’s older brother was a pyromancer in the corps- but I guess it's a little rare, I don’t know. I really never told you about him?

DYLAN: Can’t recall it if you did. Uh- and he’s - that was some kinda sign language?

ELLIE: Yeah, it was

DYLAN: Look, I wanted to apologize. About the other day. I talked to Jenna yesterday, and it sounds like you thought I came off cruel, or insensitive-

ELLIE: No,no,no! You were fine. I was just embarrassed, that’s all. Please don’t worry about it.

DYLAN: That’s good. Cause I do like you, Ellie. As a friend and all. I- you just caught me off guard?

ELLIE: Yeah, totally. I understand.

DYLAN: So we’re cool?

ELLIE: Uh. yeah, we’re cool.

DYLAN: That’s good. Uh, ok, well. Be seeing you.

ELLIE: Not if I see you first.

[SCENE 5: THE ELECTROMANCY DORM]

MR. DONOVAN: Dear Jenna,

Sorry I can’t write more, Mr. McCray can’t stay long. And I’m sorry my last letter never reached you. There wasn’t anything too important in it, just the musings of a lonely old man. The sandwich place you like closed down- that’s the biggest news around here. Glad to hear you’re playing music again. Hope this helps.

Love, Dad

ELLIE: Okay, Justin is in! As soon as I get the… numbers from Devon I can let him know, and we should be all good! And Dylan came and talked to me and he was really sweet. I mean, he definitely doesn’t see me as more than a friend, but he talked to me, which means at least our friendship is important to him, which is like- Jenna, are you okay? You look, like really not okay.

JENNA: I’m really not okay.

ELLIE: Do you want to talk about it?

JENNA: I don’t know if I should.

ELLIE: Uh, okay, well - sorry for blathering on, I didn’t realize-

JENNA: It’s fine.

ELLIE: Is that a letter?

JENNA: From my dad, yeah.

ELLIE: Bad news from home?

JENNA: Read it.

ELLIE: Wow, you, um, you really liked that sandwich shop, huh?

JENNA: The sandwich shop is a code phrase.

ELLIE: Ah.

JENNA: Something’s happened to him. I don’t know what exactly. But, combined with what that weird person in the capital told me- but there’s nothing I can do about it.

ELLIE: Oh no. Jenna, maybe- I mean, winter break is coming up, right? If he… If… They’d have to tell you sooner or later.

JENNA: Yeah. And he did write this, which means he’s alive. I just… wish I had some way to find out more. And Bruce just… lied to me.

ELLIE: Well, he is a teacher.

JENNA: Yeah, I know. I’d just sort of started to feel like he was on my side.

ELLIE: Well, on the bright side, if everything goes well tonight, you’ll be reading that journal by tomorrow.

JENNA: Somehow I doubt I’ll find any useful answers for this problem in something that was written six years ago.

[SCENE 6: A HALLWAY]

DEVON: *tel* Okay, the locked supply closet is on the other side of this wall, so all I gotta do is act casual until…

LUCAS: Yo.

DEVON: Hi Lucas…

LUCAS: Whatcha up to?

DEVON: Just admiring the fine… wall… art.

LUCAS: Oh yeah. I love this piece. This senior photomancer, Lindsey Faron, did it when I was a freshman as a final project. See the way the lightning and the fire kinda… glow and sparkle?

DEVON: Uh huh..

LUCAS: Yeah, I think there might also be some kind of psychomancy on it because whenever I look it I just feel really, like, inspired, you know? Like this is what it's all for.

DEVON: What what’s all for?

LUCAS: School. Training. I think Lindsey said it was some battle from the Gavnian campaign. But yeah, two mages against a whole mundane army. Bringing the light, you know?

DEVON: I… don’t know that I do. Gavnia was - one of the more brutal, uh, campaigns Oswer fought. Lots of civilian deaths. This is really what you aspire to?

LUCAS: Defending the empire? Hell yeah. I mean, I’ve pretty much come to terms with my place in all this. In a mech just like that one. Well, 300 years more advanced than that one. But you get the idea.

ROSARIO: *tel* I know these security measures are necessary, but having to get the components myself every single time a student needs something is starting to be a real pain. Now was it three raven’s feathers and one glass bead for each of them? Or one raven’s feather and three glass beads? Damn it. I should have written this down.

LUCAS: You… okay?

DEVON: Yeah, just… being…uh… inspired. By the art.

ROSARIO: I’ll just get three of each. Okay, so it’s 5, 4, 3, 5, 7, 6. There we go!

DEVON: Gotta go. We should… talk more about this later.

[SCENE 7: THE CAFETERIA, BREAKFAST TIME]

BRYNN: Okay, Justin came through, with Devon’s help, so we’re on. We both have fourth period free today, right?

JENNA: Yeah, I do.

BRYNN: Great, meet me outside the thorn room.

JENNA: The what?

PEM: I can show you where it is.

BRYNN: Devon, can you come be our lookout?

DEVON: No, I have Kalaran, and I can’t skip cause I have a test.

PEM: I can lookout, especially if I have to show Jenna how to find it anyway. We have third period together.

BRYNN: Just make a lot of noise if someone comes by. This ritual is a little more complicated than anything I’ve done before, but I’m pretty sure I can swing it.

PEM: I can look over it and make notes, if you want. I’ve studied a little ritual magic.

DEVON: Wait… really? How?

PEM: Uh, Cyrus helps me get restricted books sometimes. Just stuff above my grade level, nothing, like, really off-limits. He… likes that I like to learn.

BRYNN: Thanks, Pem, but I’m pretty sure I’ve got it. I’ll call you in if I get stuck.

PEM: Okay.

BRYNN: Princess, you okay? You look like someone killed your royal pony. C’mon, you should be excited about this.

JENNA: I am. Just.. some other stuff going on. Nothing I want to bother you with.

BRYNN: Boy trouble?

JENNA: Definitely not.

BRYNN: (honestly a little bit hopeful) ...girl trouble?

JENNA: It’s not important. There’s nothing I can do about it, so… let’s focus on this.

BRYNN: Okay. I’ll meet you in the thorn room at fourth period.

[SCENE 8: MARINA’S OFFICE]

MARINA: How’d it go?

BRUCE: I don’t like lying to her.

MARINA: Did you? He did send a letter. We didn’t let it through because we were afraid it contained secret instructions. And he is fine- for now, anyway. He’s at the facility for suspected dissidents- if he were a confirmed dissident, that would be another story. Anyway, if it were up to me, Donovan would be with her father right now.

BRUCE: Fortunately, it's not up to you.

MARINA: Yes. The higher ups want to preserve the chance she could be an asset to us. Same with Tessek. They’re greedy. Can’t blame them- mages of that caliber are generational talents. But to me, the risk isn’t worth the reward. I don’t like the idea that we’re training our own enemies.

BRUCE: Donovan’s no dissident. She’s just a scared girl trying to cope with an overwhelming situation.

MARINA: Because your track record with identifying anti-imperial sentiment has been so flawless so far.

BRUCE: Leonard fooled all of us.

MARINA: You say that like it exonerates you.

BRUCE: You know if you’d let me in on the other side of this investigation I could be a lot more help.

MARINA: You had that chance. To earn that kind of trust. Back in Caba.

BRUCE: That was a complicated situation-

MARINA: It wasn’t, really. Your duty was clear, and you let your conscience get in the way. And that’s how we knew you weren’t cut out for that kind of work.

It’s okay. You have a soft side. No shame in it. But that’s why they took you out of the field and put you in a school.

BRUCE: You’re really keeping half of this investigation from me, because I wasn’t able to kill a child?

MARINA: Because you refused to kill an enemy combatant! Because you had an opportunity to deprive the rebels of an extremely valuable asset and you wasted it. Because you think of mages as people first and tools of the empire second. And so even though you’ve sworn your fealty to the empire, your mindset will always be more closely aligned with the dissidents.

Worry about what happens inside the walls of this school. I’ll concern myself with the bigger picture. And I’ll tell you what you need to know- when you need to know it.

[SCENE 9: THE THORN ROOM]

JENNA: Don’t we need to pick up the book first?

BRYNN: The book is in the thorn room.

JENNA: That’s your super-secret hiding place?

BRYNN: Why not? There’s no reason for anyone to go in there. Especially since I’ve been spreading an entirely baseless rumor that some of the brambles are poisonous.

PEM: They’re not?

BRYNN: Pretty sure they’re not! Well, they’ve never poisoned me, at least. Maybe like a mild rash? But the more people think they are, the less likely anyone is to mess with my contraband storage.

JENNA: How did the thorn room… happen, anyway?

PEM: Six years ago a group of Senior floramancers tried to devise a new ritual as a capstone project. It, uh…

JENNA: It didn’t work?

PEM: No, it did work! It worked way too well. The idea was to create an impassable area that enemy mages couldn’t dispel, burn away, or cut down. They succeeded. To the point that even the teachers never figured out how to remove it. I think I heard someone say that getting rid of it was going to be Susan’s capstone project.

BRYNN: Ugh, she’d better not. C’mon, it’s just up here. Kinda hard to get the door open sometimes...

[we hear her struggling with the door]

Here we go.

PEM: I’ll stay out here and make a noise if anyone comes by.

JENNA: How do we even get in there?

BRYNN: I’ll show you.

JENNA: What are you doing?

BRYNN: Just take my hand, okay? I’ve been here a lot, I know the best route through. And there’s a clear area in the northwest corner of the room. Or at least there used to be.

JENNA: Ouch!

BRYNN: Sorry, yeah. That’s a tricky one.

JENNA: This is an awful hiding place!

BRYNN: This is the perfect hiding place. C’mon. Just a little further. Here we go. My secret stash. You’re only the second person I’ve shown it to.

JENNA: Is that… are those drugs? Are you a drug dealer?

BRYNN: Technically I guess they are. But they’re not recreational drugs.

JENNA: Do I want to know?

BRYNN: Leonard said if I ever needed to get in touch with him, I should smoke this in a hidden place. He said to make sure we had a lookout.

JENNA: That’s an elsewhere pipe.

BRYNN: A what?

JENNA: An elsewhere pipe- its a piece of Ardovan folk magic. It puts you in a dream state where you can talk to someone far away. Usually the… stuff that goes in the pipe is primed with some essence of the person it will contact.

BRYNN: Seems really complicated when we have telephones.

JENNA: They didn’t have telephones when they used these! But they’re super rare now, how did Leonard get one?

BRYNN: I have no idea. Here’s your book, if you want to get started.

JENNA: Yeah. Let’s… let’s do this.

BRYNN: Okay, your mom’s friend wrote the ritual on the back flap- it will bind the contents of the book so that if anyone but you tries to read it they’ll just see gibberish. Oh, I am gonna need just, like, a tiny little bit of your hair.

JENNA: My hair?

BRYNN: Pretty common for this kinda magic. At least it’s not blood. Here, you can use my knife.

JENNA: Is this much okay?

BRYNN: It just says “a lock”. That’s probably fine.

JENNA: You could have brought scissors.

BRYNN: Slipped my mind.

JENNA: Uh- oof. Here you go.

BRYNN: Okay, cool. Got some hair, got the book, got these sunflower petals, a pinch of gold dust, and a peacock feather. Let’s do us a ritual.

JENNA: This kinda magic creeps me out.

BRYNN: Same. Take my hands, I gotta channel your power.

JENNA: Ok.

BRYNN: Ready?

JENNA: Ready.

BRYNN: Otare avenush sacrum fidane. Otare varashun fidane. Maresh pashun. Maresh pecor. Aradane- hatun!

[a sound effect based on the photomancy noise, but more impressive.]

JENNA: That was it?

BRYNN: I think so. Unless your mom actually wrote “Potato armrest portable squirrel defroster.”

JENNA: That is.. not what this says.

BRYNN: Then we’re good. Let’s get out of here.

JENNA: Actually let’s not.

BRYNN: Why not?

JENNA: Because I need to use that pipe to contact Leonard.

BRYNN: What? Why?

JENNA: You remember that woman back in the dress shop in Polis Alexei?

BRYNN: Yeah…

JENNA: She said something about my father. And then today I get a letter from him and it has one of our code phrases in it. Something he told me he’d write if anything… happened to him. I think the magecorps has him. And if they do- I just need to find out.

BRYNN: And you think Leonard would know?

JENNA: Someone gave him an Ardovan elsewhere pipe. And you said he was working with the coalition-

BRYNN: Was your father working with the coalition?

JENNA: If he was, he never told me. But… there were connections. I can’t say more, but- if Leonard is with the coalition, they’ll know if Oswer has my dad.

BRYNN: And what do we do about it if they do?

JENNA: I don’t know. But I have to find out, and we have another 45 minutes before anyone goes looking for us. Now is the perfect time.

BRYNN: He told me to only use this in an emergency-

JENNA: This is one.

[beat]

BRYNN: Look, Leonard trusted me with this, okay? We use it now, what do we do if one of us is in real danger? How do I connect with them when I finally decide to bail?

JENNA: When?

BRYNN: If! I don’t know! I sorta had a plan for this.

JENNA: Brynn, my mother is gone. My dad is all I have left-

BRYNN: Yeah, well I’ve got no one left.

JENNA: What?

BRYNN: Jenna, remember in the library? When I told you I was from Dakora? That was a lie. I mean, I might be from there originally. I don’t know. The magecorp found me in an orphanage in Tapara city, in Kalos. Leonard… was the closest thing to a parent I ever had, I guess. The only grown-up who seemed to care about me for any reason besides what I could do for them. Or at least I thought so.

JENNA: What do you think now?

BRYNN: I don’t know. So I was kinda hoping not to lose my one chance to get some closure on that relationship.

JENNA: Brynn, I believe that you will see him again. But I might never see my dad again without your help.

Please.

[beat]

BRYNN: *sigh* Fine. You ever even smoked before?

[SCENE 10: SCIENCE CLASS]

KATYA: And don’t forget about the quiz on Wednesday. This one is not open book, you will actually want to study. I promise you, it will be difficult.

That is all, you can go.

DYLAN: Ellie, wait up!

ELLIE: No you can’t cheat off my quiz!

DYLAN: What makes you think I was gonna ask that?

ELLIE: I don’t know, experience?

DYLAN: Nah. It’s not that. Look, I- what if I did want to go with you?

ELLIE: Go with me where?

DYLAN: To the dance.

ELLIE: Ha. What?

DYLAN: Is your offer still open? Do you want to go to the dance with me?

ELLIE: Why the sudden change of heart?

DYLAN: So you’re going with someone else.

ELLIE: Just my friends.

DYLAN: Jenna and… that Volari kid. The one who uses way too many big words.

ELLIE: Pem, yeah. Uh, though I guess Pem is going with this freshman? So maybe just Jenna.

DYLAN: Well, can I tag along with you? As one of your friends?

ELLIE: So, not as a date?

DYLAN: No, as a date is good too, but if you didn’t want to leave Jenna in the lurch-

ELLIE: Oh, I get it. Jenna shot you down, and you’re using me as a sneaky way to go with her anyway. That’s really smooth. Really smooth Dylan, and not going to work. Sorry.

[beat]

DYLAN: What in the ten realms just happened?

[SCENE 11: A DREAM REALM]

[have fun with using the sound design to make this scene dream-like.]

LEONARD: Brynn! What’s happened- Jenna? What are you doing here?

JENNA: Dr. Sumner. It’s a - it’s a really long story, actually. Are you- I guess you can’t tell me where you are.

LEONARD: I really can’t. What’s going on? Why did you use the pipe?

JENNA: I think the magecorps has taken my dad. And I need to know if the Coalition knows anything.

LEONARD: What does that have to do with me?

JENNA: Brynn told me you’re with the coalition.

LEONARD: Why would she tell you that? Well, I did tell her to sell me out. But, Jenna, the people I’m with- and I’m not saying they are the Northern Coalition and I’m not saying they’re not- they don’t exactly tell me everything that happens around here.

JENNA: Are they Ardovan? Or are there Ardovans with them?

LEONARD: At least one. Their leader.

JENNA: What’s their name?

LEONARD: She hasn’t told me. Everyone just calls her Reletha-satur.

JENNA: Of course. She would be another lightning mage. Look, tell her I contacted you- tell her, specifically. Make sure you tell her I’m also- Reletha-satur. She’ll know who I am.

LEONARD: I won’t be able to contact you again. I- I primed Brynn’s pipe with my own essence and I- put a little bit of hers in mine. She didn’t notice me siphoning it, but I thought - I might need to warn her about something just as easily as she might need to warn me. So I can reach out to her with an answer.

JENNA: Guess I’ll just have to trust her then.

LEONARD: This was our only avenue of communication. We only had one call each way. So I hope this was worth it.

JENNA: I hope so too. Look, when you do talk to Brynn-

LEONARD: Yes?

JENNA: Never mind. Just, get me an answer. Please.

[SCENE 12: THE COALITION HIDE-OUT]

SYLVIA: Leonard. Leonard! What happened, where were you?

ALANDRA: The pipe. Tessek contacted him.

LEONARD: No. Not- it wasn’t Brynn. It was the pipe I gave her, but-

SYLVIA: Who, then? Who got their hands on it?

LEONARD: It was- your daughter.
